Abstract

618,169. Gauging-apparatus. P.A.M., Ltd., and HOLT, H. B. W. Oct. 30, 1946, No. 32186. [Class 106 (ii)] A linear - dimension gauge comprises a housing carrying a movable work - engaging plunger and a contact and valve amplifying means adapted to operate an indicator when the gap between the plunger and contact is closed. The housing 4 has detachable end pieces in the' lower of which is slidably mounted the plunger 6 having a flat contact extension for cooperation with a sphericallyground contact-end 5 of a rod 15 mounted in an insulating bush. The contact-pieces are polished and plated and the rod 15 is connected by a flat spring 17 to a rod 18 also mounted in an insulating bush, a screw 22, having a dial 25 and an insulating tip 23, being provided to bow the spring and so to adjust the contact 5. The grid of a triode-diode valve V1 is normally supplied with an A.C. signal derived from a potentiometer R1, R2, which signal is amplified and rectified by the diode to produce a negative potential which is applied to the grid of a triode V2 to bias it beyond cut-off. However, when the plunger 6 engages the contact 5 in a gauging operation, the resistance R2, the ends of which are connected to the rod 18 and to the housing 4 respectively by a cable 7, is short-circuited so that the negative potential is removed from the grid of the valve V2 which then becomes conducting to cause a relay 1 in its anode circuit to close the circuit of a visual or aural indicator. On an alternative circuit (not shown, for universal valves, the valve V2 is a tetrode and the relay 1 is connected in the cathode circuit. To simplify servicing of the amplifiers, the resistances and condensers, the relay and, if used, the transformer and the metal rectifier may be built into sealed boxes adapted to plug into valve-holders secured to the chassis.
