Abstract

611,333. Thermionic valve voltmeters. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. April 26, 1946, No. 12706. Convention date, May 2, 1945. [Class 37] A D.C. voltage to be measured is applied to the grid 16 of a D.C. amplifier 18 whose anode is connected over resistance 25 and a meter 5 with a linear scale to a source 14 which is low compared with the normal anode potential for the valve 18, so that the valve has a substantially logarithmic response characteristic, and the valve is biassed beyond cut-off by potentiometer 23 to adjust the zero of the meter. Preferably the grid of valve 18 is fed from a cathode follower valve 8, 7, 13 whose grid is supplied from the source (which may be low A.C.) to be measured. By varying resistance 25 (or the anode voltage) the slope of the characteristic can be varied, and sensitivity can be adjusted by varying the tap 15 on resistances 9 and 10.
