Abstract
574,830. Thermionic valve voltmeters. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. April 21, 1944, No. 7408. Convention date, April 24, 1943. [Class 37] A valve voltmeter is arranged for measuring either direct or alternating voltages. The voltage to be measured is applied between earth and an input terminal 1 connected to the grid 2 of a valve 3. The plate 5 is connected to a D.C. source 8A the negative terminal of which is earthed. The cathode 6 is connected through a resistance 7 to another D.C. source 8B having its positive terminal earthed. A resistance 10 is connected between a slider 30 on the resistance 7 and one contact 11 of a two-way switch 12, the arm of which is connected to earth through a microammeter M. The cathode 6 is also connected through a blocking condenser 14 to the plate 16 of a diode 17, the cathode 18 of which is connected to a contact 28 of a switch 27, gauged with the switch 12, and also to the plate 20 of a second diode 21. The cathode 22 of the diode 21 is connected through a resistance 23 to the second contact 25 of the switch 12 and also through a resistance 26 to the plate 16 of the diode 17. For measuring a direct voltage the switches 12, 27 are moved to the left-hand position, so that the microammeter M is connected to the slider 30, which is so adjusted that the microammeter reads zero when no voltage is applied to the terminal 1. When a positive potential is applied to the terminal 1 an increase of cathode current occurs and a corresponding reading is given. For measuring an alternating voltage the switch arms are moved to the right connecting the micro ammeter M to the contact 25 and earthing the contact 28. When an alternating voltage is applied to the terminal 1, a corresponding alternating voltage appears at the cathode 6 and is applied through the condenser 14 to the plate 16 of the diode 17. The rectified current passes through the resistance 26 and microammeter M and gives a corresponding reading. In the absence of an applied alternating voltage the emission currents of the diodes 17, 21 cancel out and produce no reading. Any unidirectional component of the alternating voltage is removed by the blocking condenser 14.
