Abstract

[Class 117] In screening apparatus comprising a rigid member or primary mass mounted on springs and subjected to substantially rectilinear vibrations, and a screening compartment or secondary mass adapted to vibrate in accordance with the movements of the primary mass, buffer springs, interposed between the two vibrating masses, serve to determine the deceleration and acceleration of the secondary mass as it approaches or recedes from the primary mass. As shown, the primary mass 3 is connected to the stationary framework 12 by leaf springs 4 and is reciprocated vertically by connecting rods 2 from an eccentric shaft 1. The screening compartment 6 is connected to the framework 12 by leaf springs 9 and tension springs 11, and to the primary mass 3 by further tension springs 10, all connected to the side members 7 of the compartment 6. Buffer springs 5 are adjustably secured to the mass 3, and may be moved into or out of contact with the side-members 7 of compartment 6. When all the buffer springs are, at all times of working, in contact with the compartment 6, the motion of the latter is simple harmonic of an amplitude and frequency determined by all the springs 5, 9, 10, 11. The buffer springs 5 may be set to part company with the compartment 6, either all at once or in succession, on the downstroke, and to meet it again on the upstroke, the distance or period of deceleration being determined by the stiffness of the buffer springs. With the arrangement shown the whole machine must be tilted to cause the material to travel along the surface 8. In a modication the framework 12 and compartment 6 are horizontal, but the primary mass 3 and the springs are arranged at an angle so that the screening impulses are inclined to the screening surface 8. In a modification the framework 3 is divided into two halves, with two sets of leaf springs 4 and two sets of buffer springs 5. Specification 493,216 is referred to.
