Abstract
Primary ultramarine is produced by forming the ultramarine mix into briquets and placing them in a refractory container in which they are fired. The briquets, which preferably have a density of at least 1.2, may be made by pressing in a mould or, when a binder is used, on a roll press. Water may be used as the binder, in which case the briquets must be dried immediately. Other binders include oil such as kerosene and water-soluble materials, preferably mixed with water, such as glutrin and sodium silicate. Alternatively, the mix may form its own binder by heating to the melting point of sulphur. The examples describe mixtures containing dried china clay, diatomite, soda ash, sulphur and rosin. Specification 617,523 is referred to.
