Abstract
A refractory heat-insulating composition comprises a light, porous, exfoliated heat resisting mineral, e.g. vermiculite, and a high alumina hydraulic cement. Plastic and calcined fire clay may also be included, and powdered charcoal up to 10 per cent may be added to produce voids when the material is heated to a high temperature. In an example, a composition comprises 50-60 per cent by weight of exfoliated vermiculite, 15-20 per cent of calcined clay, 5-10 per cent of plastic fire clay and 20-30 per cent of high alumina hydraulic cement. The pulverized materials are mixed dry and then water is added to produce the required plasticity. On being heated to a high temperature during use the mass vitrifies and gives a smooth dense glazed surface. The particles of exfoliated vermiculite are preferably of a size between 10 and 30 mesh to the inch. Other suitable minerals are jefferisite, biotite, and zonolite.
