Abstract

617,046. Apparatus for recording sound on film. PHILIPS LAMPS, Ltd. Sept. 27, 1946, No. 28917. Convention date, March 10, 1943. [Class 40 (ii)] In an apparatus for recording sound on film for optical reproduction, means are provided whereby a light beam falling on a photo-electric cell is modulated by the mechanical oscillations of the recording member, in order to provide negative feed-back in the recording amplifier for the purpose of counteracting distortion. In one embodiment, Fig. 1, in which a shallow V-shaped stylus M cuts a track in a film having an opaque surface, a wedge-shaped member S of negligible mass carried by the stylus M modulates a beam of light passing through a slit B on to a photo-electric cell F. In a second embodiment, Fig. 2 (not shown), for photographic sound-films, a mirror S vibrating in accordance with sound vibrations to be recorded modulates light, from a source L, which is reflected on to the film F through a slit. At the same time the mirror S modulates the light, from a second source L<SP>1</SP>, which is reflected on to a photoelectric cell from which the feed-back voltages are obtained.
