470,137. Optical sound recording. ELLIS, G. B. (Klangfilm Ges.) Sept. 10, 1936, No. 24736. [Class 40 (ii)] An apparatus for recording sound on films with reduced ground noise is adapted to produce selectively either (1) a negative with reduced ground noise ready for direct reproduction, or (2) a negative from which are obtained positives with reduced ground noise for reproduction. In one form, Fig. 1, light from a source 11 passes through screen 17 and lens 19 to oscillating mirror 18 and thence through anti-groundnoise shutter 16, slot 15, and objective 13 to film 14, where a record of single-hump, doublehump, multiple-hump, or variable density is produced according to shape or nature of screen 17. The side of the shutter 16 facing the film is mirrored to reflect light from a source 12 or from the source 11 on to the film. In another form, Fig. 3, light from a source 1 passes through condenser 2 and screen 3 to recording element 4 and thence through prism 5, shutters 7, 8, and optical device 12 to film 13 ; and light from the same source 1 passes through condenser 2, prism 6, shutters 7, 8 and optical device 12 to film. The shutter 7 has separate slots 7<1>, 7<11> for the separate beams of light, and the shutter 8 has a wider slot 15, 16, Fig. 4, and is controlled by a device 9 for anti-ground-noise effect. Alternatively, the shutter 8 may be replaced by two separate shutters. In either form, when a negative free from ground noise ready for direct reproduction is desired, the second light beam is put in operation, and when a negative yielding positives free from ground noise is desired, the second light beam is switched off, deflected or shuttered.
