417,741. Optical sound recording and reproducing apparatus. SELENOPHON LICHTUND TONBILDGES., 25, Neubaugasse, Vienna. Nov. 23, 1933, No. 32762. Convention date, Nov. 26, 1932. [Class 40 (ii).] Apparatus for recording sound on an opaque carrier, and for reproducing the sound by means of reflected light, is characterized by the provision of two optical systems, so arranged with their axes in one plane that the same apparatus may be used either for recording or for reproducing. One of the optical systems may also be used for monitoring during recording. As shown, light from a source L is condensed by lenses K, and passes through a slot B, an image of which is focused by a lens system A on a vibratory strip K<1> forming part of a light valve. A lens system C projects an image of the edge of the illuminated member K<1> on a point P on an opaque strip T of paper or the like, so that the sound is there recorded. A second optical system D focuses light reflected from the record strip, on to a photoelectric cell Z, whereby reproduction from a previously made record may be effected with the same apparatus, the member K<1> in this case being stationary. The optical system D may be used for inspecting the image at the point P during recording, by reflecting a part of the beam through a prism Q on to a frosted screen N, whilst the cell Z may at the same time provide a means for monitoring acoustically. The record strip is driven by a roller R of large diameter, which moves the strip by friction due to adhesion.
