Abstract

468,704. Optical sound recording or reproducing. KODAK, Ltd. (Eastman Kodak Co.) Jan. 9, 1936, No. 749. [Class 40 (ii)] In order that a light beam in a sound recording or reproducing apparatus may be focused accurately on to a record track. or photographic layer which may be on the near or far surface of the film, without adjusting the lens system, one or more supplementary optical elements each having two predetermined settings is or are provided. As shown, the lens system 1 focuses the light-beam on to a track 2 on the far side of the film 3, but if the track is on the near side of the film, the supplementary lens 5 carried by an arm pivoted at 6 is swung against a stop 8 into the path of the light-beam, the lens 5 being such as to effect the required variation in the focal point. A stop 7 determines the setting of the lens carrying arm in inoperative position. The optical element 5 may be a negative lens, a piece of glass with plane parallel faces, or a combination of prisms, e.g. a pair of right-angled prisms relatively adjustable to vary the thickness through which the light passes.
