Abstract
633,509. Optical gauging-apparatus. BRITISH CELLOPHANE, Ltd., and SAMWAYS, B. June 13, 1947, No. 15692. [Class 106 (ii)] Transparent birefringent film of artificial organic material travelling in a substantially fixed path is passed through an optical gauging- apparatus, utilizing polarized light, the variation in the film width being recorded on a chemically photo-sensitive sheet or film. As shown, the side edges of the film 1 pass between two optical systems consisting of constant light sources 8, 8<SP>1</SP> projecting light through narrow slits covered by ground glass covers 2, 2<SP>1</SP> over which are light-polarizing sheets 3, 3<SP>1</SP> for converting the light to plane polarized light. A second set of light-polarizing sheets 4, 41 is arranged to receive the plane polarized light and set for extinction therewith, and pairs of plane glass or metal mirrors 5, 5<SP>1</SP> are adapted to reflect any light transmitted by the means 4, 41 to form by reflection a virtual image 10 combining images 9, 9<SP>1</SP> of the edge portions of the film 1. The properties of the film 1 are such that light passing therethrough will be transmitted by the second means 4, 41. A photographic camera 6 is focused so as to record on chemically photo-sensitive film 7 a photograph of the combined image 10. The film 7 is continuous and drawn forward either at a constant speed, or at a speed bearing a constant relation to that of the machine for casting the transparent film 1. Scales inscribed in the slits of the light sources 8, 81 are also photographed. In a modification, above each side edge of the transparent film 1 is arranged a system comprising a light source, a collimating lens, and a light-polarizing sheet, but the right-hand system covers more of the film edge than the left-hand system. Further light-polarizing sheets are arranged below the film and set for extinction with the first sheets, and plane mirrors, which are staggered vertically, are positioned to reflect any light transmitted by the second sheets either on to a moving photo-sensitive web of paper or on to a slit in an opaque screen which is continuously photographed. The reflections from the two mirrors are adjusted so that when projected they lie end to end on the paper web or screen.
