Recording sounds photographically; records. -Sounds are recorded photographically, on a disk or film, which is treated to leave a record iu relief, which then forms a matrix for stamping further records. A beam of light entering through a screen 3 passes through a lens 4, and is reflected from an interior surface of a prism 5 on to a mirror 2 attached to a sound-receiving diaphragm 1. The light is reflected from the mirror 2 through a prism 6 and lens 7 having a varying transmitting power and through a slit in a screen 9 on to a photographic plate or film record 8. The prism 6 is arranged at rightangles to a radius when a disk record is used, but longitudinally of a film record, to present a varying transmitting power. The varying transmitting-medium may consist of two prisms 6 or of a varying coloured ribbon or of a screen having a triangular slit.
