Abstract
616,683. Protective arrangements. HAMILTON, A., SILLARS, R. W., and METROPOLITAN-VICKERS ELECTRICAL CO., Ltd. Sept. 23, 1946, No. 28430. [Class 38 (iv)] A protective device for low voltage apparatus comprises a spark-gap formed over a surface of silicon carbide material. A flat plate of the material may be interposed between electrodes so that the periphery of the plate forms the spark-over surface. A metal tape as wide as the desired gap may be wound for one turn around the cylindrical surface of a disc or rod and removed after the disc or rod has been metal sprayed. Electrodes of metal foil may be pressed the surface of the material so that their edges are in contact with it and are separated by the desired gap. A disc of the material of the thickness of the gap desired may have its faces sprayed with metal up to the edges, or be clamped between overhanging metal plates, or both. The material referred to is described as a non-linear resistance material composed of a pressed and sintered mixture of carborundum with clay or other binding material and the effect is to increase the gap required for 250 volts to between .005 and .010 inch.
