Abstract
538,331. Ceramic resistors. ROSENTHAL, E. June 27. 1940. No. 10966. [Class 22] [Also in Group XXXVI] Ceramic resistors, which have a high resistance to normal voltages but become conductors when subjected to over-voltages ; for use in lightning arrestors and electric discharge devices consist of purified and washed kaolin, finely granulated carborundum and a small addition of free carbon graphite or metal powder. The mixture may be made in a ball mill or grinding cylinder with water to render it liquid and. the water removed in a filter press, or in a vacuum or other pug-mill with only sufficient water to render it pasty. The paste is shaped by ceramic methods and baked in a reducing atmosphere or while embedded in carbon powder. The free carbon may be obtained in the mixture by decomposition during this stage. An addition of plastic clay may be made.
