Abstract
484,700. Resistances. ELECTRIC SERVICE SUPPLIES CO. Sept. 8, 1936, No. 24493. Convention date, Sept. 23, 1935. [Class 37] [Also in Groups XI and XXXV] A resistance material comprises silicon carbide with a surface coating of metallic oxide consisting principally of silica. The coating is preferably a porous surface coating produced by roasting and tumbling silica carbide granules under oxidation conditions with an oxidizing substance such as iron, lead or nickel oxides. Excessive roasting may result in a surface glaze, which is less advantageous than the porous coating. The silicon carbide may be used in the form of closely compacted granules or the granules may be united to form rods &c. by using suitable binders of ceramic, organic or other material. The amount of silica, silicon and free carbon present on the surface of the granules is kept within stated limits. The resistance material is suitable for use as a lightning arrester, in which case it is connected in series with a spark gap or gaps arranged as in U.S.A. Specification 1,763,667, or it may be used as a voltage equalizer, voltage divider, surge absorber or damping element, or as an electric heating element. The dynamic failure voltage of the silicon carbide and its impedance voltage drop are respectively increased and decreased by the coating of oxide on the granules.
