Abstract

616,647. Refrigerating. UNION COLD STORAGE CO., Ltd., and LARKIN, E. E. Sept. 17, 1946, No. 27792. [Class 29] Food products are quick frozen in small freezing chambers approximating to the dimensions of the goods by direct conduction and radiation to cooling pipes or plates k while they are exposed to slowly moving currents of cold air, e.g. below 100 feet per minute, passing though the chambers individually. The sinuous cooling pipes k form horizontal shelves in the freezing chamber and are supported by a series of spaced ladder-like perforated tubular frames b e, Fig. 3, through which air is supplied to and withdrawn from the chamber.. Horizontal and vertical metal plates s, t divide the chamber up into compartments of a size to take the food packages u with little wasted space; the vertical plates t extend between the uprights b, c of the tubular frames so that the air is supplied to and withdrawn from each compartment individually. Refrigerent such as ammonia is supplied to a leader n and passes through the pipes k to an outlet pipe r. All the uprights bare connected to a duct f into which air is forced by a fan h and issues into the compartments through the apertures in the uprights b and in horizontal tubular members d connected therewith. The air is withdrawn through the opposite uprights c and the horizontal tubular members e connected therewith, which communicate with a duct g leading to the suction side of the fan h. Cooling pipes may be arranged in the air ducts f, g.
