699,906. Refrigerators; tubular heat-exchange elements. FRESH FROZEN FOODS, Ltd., and SCHOFIELD, F. H. Sept. 20, 1950 [Oct. 27, 1949 No. 27604/49. Classes 29 and 64 (iii) A heat-exchanger tube 4 is provided internally with spaced longitudinal fins 5 and externally with parallel longitudinal fins 6, 7 the fins 6, 7 all being disposed on the same side of and at right angles to an axial plane of the tube. In the form shown the outer external fins 6 are tangential to the tube wall and the tips of the fins 6, 7 line in a plane parallel to the tube axis. The internal and external fins 5, 7 are aligned. Alternatively the fins 5, 7 may be relatively staggered or the fins 5 may extend radially from the tube wall. The cross-sectional shape of the tubes may be square, rectangular, circular, triangular or elliptical and a number of tubes may be cast as a single unit. Apparatus incorporating the above tubes is shown in Fig. 2. Shelves are formed in a cabinet 11 by arranging tubes in closely spaced or abutting parallel relationship with the fins, 6, 7 of each tube depending downwardly. Metal trays 10 containing goods to be frozen are placed on the shelves and a liquid or gaseous cooling medium is passed through the tubes. The air within the cabinet is circulated by a fan 12 and the goods in the trays are cooled, partly by conduction through the tube walls but mainly the air which is cooled by contact with the tubes.
