Abstract

616,040. Electric welding. HENDERSON, L. B. Aug. 21, 1946, No. 24998. [Class 83 (iv)] In a roller-electrode welding machine for seaming tubes &c., current conducting liquid, e.g. mercury, fills the space 13 between the enlarged cylindrical end 12 of a fixed support 10, and a co-operating contact sleeve 3 projecting from one of two rotary electrode discs 1 insulatedly bolted together to form the welding head. The support 10 carries a ballbearing 9 and a mercury seal ring 19, and has ducts 15, 18 for circulating mercury from a reservoir 17. A further sleeve 2 forms with the inner sleeve 3 an annulus for water-cooling, connected by tubes 22, 23 to a hollow, detachable electrode rim 20, and closed by a stationary gland ring 5 carrying inlet and outlet tubes 6, 7. The end 12 has a spigot for centring the disc 1 and the rim 20 is in two parts.
