Abstract

647,157. Collectors. ANGLO-IRANIAN OIL CO., Ltd., and BEAUMONT, F. N. Aug. 18, 1947, No. 22880. [Class 38 (i)] [Also in Group XXII] In an apparatus for electric arc welding pipes and the like, the earthing lead is secured to a block rotatably mounted on a shaft secured to the pipe and maintained in positive electric contact with the shaft so as to permit rotation of the pipe during circumferential welding without entanglement of the said lead. The gun-metal shaft 2, which is provided with a clamp 1 for securing to the pipe and is provided at one end with a flange 3 and at the other end with a screwed collar 8, has mounted thereon a rectangular block 5 provided with circular cavities 6, 7 to form seatings for the flange and collar 8. The bottoms of the cavities receive copper-carbon contact rings 14, 15 which are maintained in contact with the shaft and block by a coil spring 16, and sealing rings of felt 12, 13 are contained in channels 10, 11 in the block for excluding foreign matter from the contact rings. The ring 15 is electrically connected by flexible leads 17 to the collar 8, and the earth lead 19 is secured by a union to the block 5. In a modification the rings 14, 15 are replaced by two spring-loaded carbon brushes bearing on the shaft from diametrically opposite directions.
