Abstract
716,573. Supplying current to rotating conductors. SCIAKY, D. March 7, 1952, No. 5996/52. Addition to 667,146. Class 38(1). A modification of the mechanism for a resistance welding machine described in the parent Specification comprises an arm 213, Fig. i, in which is journalled a shaft 214 having an electrode wheel 215 secured to its outer end. Current is conducted to the shaft from the arm 213 through segments 233 of high conductivity which are of trapezoidal cross-section and surround the shaft. The segments have sliding contact with a sleeve 232 secured to the shaft and their sloping faces engage a corresponding face on the arm 213. Studs 234 which loosely anchor the segments to the arm carry springs 236 which urge the segments into contact both with the arm and the shaft. Cooling fluid is supplied to the assembly through a pipe 242. In a modification, Fig. 2, a stationary shaft 32 bolted to an arm 313 is surrounded by a rotatable housing 324 carrying the electrode wheel 334; spring-loaded segments 331 similar to those in the previous embodiment conducting current from the shaft to the housing. In this case the shaft has the sloping face which engages the sloping faces of the segments.
