Abstract
667,146. Supplying current to rotating conductors. SCIAKY, D. Oct. 28, 1949 [Aug. 2, 1949], No. 27674/49. Class 38 (i). [Also in Group XXII] A rotating shaft 25 preferably carrying the electrode wheel 26 of a resistance seam-welding machine, has conducting elements 67 which are loaded by springs 72, 73 so that they are in contact with both the shaft and a stationary arm 13, thereby conducting current from a source connected at the arm to the shaft. The arm 13 has secured thereto two bearing-blocks 48, 50 provided with insulated ball-bearings 52, 53 on which the shaft rotates. A highly conductive bearing surface 66 is fitted to the shaft for the segmented elements 67 which are floatingly mounted, each on a pin 68 which also carries the spring 72 and is embedded at its ends in an insulating block 71 and the bearing-block 50. The springs 73 are normal to the other springs, thereby forcing the elements against the surface 66. The shaft is cooled by passing fluid through a central tube 77, the fluid returning by the insulating tube 81 bridging the arm and the shaft. Cooling fluid may also be fed into a channel 75, 76 in the block 50 and lubricant introduced through a vent 84 in the block 48 to the elements 67.
