Abstract

A composition for testing and estimating carbohydrates in body fluids comprises a minor amount of a water-soluble cupric salt, a large quantity of acidic solid which is either citric, tartaric, or malic acid or an alkalimetal acid salt of one of these acids or of phosphoric or hypophosphoric acid, and an excess of solid oxide or hydroxide of alkali metal. Upon solution in water the composition generates the heat necessary for carrying out the test. An example consists of 1000 gms. of powdered caustic soda, 500 gms. of citric acid, and 50 gms. of anhydrous cupric sulphate, the mixture being pressed into 5 grain tablets.
