Abstract

Saponaceous cleansing - compositions; lubricants for machinery. - Normal or basic double stearates, palmitates, oleates, &c. are produced by acting on fatty acids with a solution of alkali and of a metal oxide soluble in the alkali e.g. oxide of aluminium or of zinc. The products may be used to thicken lubricating oils used at high or other temperatures, or as polishing materials preferably with the addition of boracic acid or other known ingredient of polishes. In an example, the normal compound 2 (Na2O). AI2O3. 10 (C18 H35 O2) is produced by mixing at 80‹ C., 687.11 lb. of stearic acid and 300 lb. of sodium aluminate solution containing 8.22 per cent of AI2 0, and 9.99 per cent of Na2O; it is heated until dry. Specification 9419/98, and the thickening of oils and greases by aluminium stearate, calcium stearate, or palmitates or oleates of aluminium, calcium, or zinc are referred to. The Provisional Specification describes also the preparation and use of the double compounds containing an excess of fatty acid. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 15774/87, 17797/98, 29113/09, and 198,681.
