Abstract

575,612. Chemical testing. MILES LABORATORIES, INC. Nov. 25, 1942, No. 16740. Convention date, June 19. [Class 1 (i)] An analytical composition in tablet form for testing liquids contains solid caustic alkali in quantity more than sufficient to neutralize the acid content of the tablet, and to provide an alkaline solution on dissolution in water, and a compatible effervescent couple for generating carbon dioxide in the presence of water, and comprising a solid acidic element such as citric acid, tartaric acid and alkali metal, acid citrates or bisulphates, and a solid alkali metal carbonate, sesquicarbonate or bicarbonate. The carbon dioxide liberated when the tablet is added to water or aqueous fluids such as urine, cerebrospinal fluid, blood, ascitic fluid, milk and beer, causes disintegration and prevents the formation of a film by precipitation or coagulation of substances in the fluids such as albumin, mucin and phosphates due to the alkalinity or heat produced. A tablet for detecting reducing sugars in water solutions contains cupric sulphate, citric or tartaric acid or acid citrates, sodium or other alkali metal hydroxide and an effervescent couple composed, for example, of citric acid and sodium bicarbonate or tartaric acid and sodium carbonate. The caustic alkali is used for its heat of solution and reaction with the acid component which is in excess of that required for the effervescent couple. The temperature required for reduction of the copper is thereby produced as well as the necessary alkalinity. A tablet for detecting acetone contains salicylaldehyde-sodium bisulphite, sodium hydroxide, tartaric acid, and sodium carbonate. The caustic alkali content is determined by the amount of fluid and type of test.
