Abstract

Crinkled areas are produced on cloth of normal non-creping twist and texture by bleach processing and stretching the cloth in a warpwise direction, printing it locally in the warpwise stretched condition with a paste containing a thermosetting resin resist, drying, polishing and glazing the dry cloth and hardening the resin by heat while the cloth is held in the prestretched condition and finally subjecting the cloth to a slack laundering operation or mechanical shrinking operation, whereby the non-printed areas are shrunk to their prestretched dimensions and the printed areas are caused to crinkle. Specified resists are urea-formaldehyde and melamine-formaldehyde condensation products and alkyd resins such as a glycerolphthalic-anhydride-fatty acid condensation product. A blend of melamine-formaldehyde resin and an alkyd resin is also suitable. If desired, the paste may contain urea and the printed fabric is then subsequently treated with aldehyde to produce the resin. Thickeners such as starch, sodium alginate, gum tragacanth, a protein thickener or a resin-oil-water emulsion may be added to the paste as also may a polymerization catalyst such as ammonium chloride. The polishing and glazing operation is effected by heated calendering rolls and this operation may also serve to harden the resin. In the slack laundering operation the cloth is subjected to a standard soap and water laundering treatment and dried in the slack condition. The mechanical shrinking operation is that known under the Registered Trade Mark "Sanforized". The cloth may be dyed prior or subsequently to the treatment or dyestuffs may be incorporated in the printing paste.
