Abstract
614,615. Cut-outs. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., and GIBSON, J. W. July 24, 1946, No. 22054. [Class 38 (i)] A bimetal fuse element for a cartridge fuse filled with arc-quenching material comprises a first part of at least one wire, strip or the like 1, Fig. 1, of high melting point metal, e.g. silver, and a second part comprising at least two parallel-connected wires, strips or the like 2 of low melting point metal, e.g. tin,_ connected in series with the first part. The element may be made as described in Specification 341,281. In order to localise the point of fusion and reduce the resistance of the element, the first part may be modified as shown in Fig. 2 by providing a short silver wire 3 connected to the junction of the tin wires 2 and having two or more parallel-connected silver wires 4 connected to the other end thereof. According to a further modification, a greater time lag is obtained by connecting two short parallel connected silver wires to the first part which may be constructed as in Figs. 1 or 2, and joining a tin wire to each of the short silver wires. The latter wires may be enclosed in heat-insulating tubing and any one of the above elements may include a heat reservoir as described in Specification 553,761.
