[Class 39 (i)] [Also in Group XV] A method of making a non-emissive electrode such as a grid comprises applying to a metallic core a coating of finely divided particles of two or more refractory metals and oxygen combined as an oxide of at least one of the metals, formed by partly reducing a mixture of oxides of the metals, and uniting the particles by sintering them to form a continuous sheath about the core. The core may be of tantalum or molybdenum, and the coating metals are tantalum, tungsten, molybdenum, niobium, vanadium, chromium, titanium, zirconium or beryllium. The preferred mixture comprises 90 per cent tantalum pentoxide and 10 per cent tungsten trioxide ; this is fired in a reducing atmosphere and then mixed with a binder which may be a nitrocellulose derivative mixed with amyl acetate. The coating is then applied to the grid which is prefired by heating in an oxygen-free atmosphere prior to mounting it in the valve envelope. In an alternative process the oxides are not prefired but are coated on the grid and reduced during the sintering process.
