(Class 38 (i) [Also in Groups V and II] A method of cementing carbon to carbon or to a metal or alloy which with carbon will form a carbide or with a carbide will form an alloy, consists in coating the surfaces to be joined with a cementing composition comprising a carbonaceous agglutinant and powdered metal which with carbon will form a carbide or with a carbide will form an alloy, assembling the parts in position, and heating in a non-oxidizing atmosphere at a temperature and for a period sufficient to convert the cement into a bonding compound of carbon and metal. Examples of suitable metals in the cement are iron, cobalt, chromium, molybdenum, tungsten, uranium, vanadium, columbium, tantalum, titanium, zirconium, thorium and alloys of these metals. Examples of carbonaceous agglutinants are animal vegetable or mineral oils and carbohydrates such as sugars, starch and cellulose. In an example, a cement for uniting shaped parts of carbon and molybdenum comprises 80-90 parts of pure iron powder e.g. hydrogen reduced iron, and 20-30 parts of saturated sugar solution. The surfaces to be joined are coated with the paste the parts are assembled and with or without air drying, are heated in a non-oxidizing atmosphere e.g. to 1250-1450‹ C. for 2-10 minutes or more, to convert the cement, into an iron carbon compound. The invention is specially applicable for joiring shaped carbon or graphite parts to tungsten or molybdenum parts in electrical apparatus e.g. molybdenurn, rods or leads to graphite electrodes. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91, comprises also the coating of shaped graphite bodies with metal by applying the cementing paste and firing in a non-oxidizing atmosphere. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 12153/06, [Class 83].
