Abstract
317,361. P. L. & M. Co., (Assignees of Morgan, H. J.). Aug. 14, 1928, [Convention date]. Drills; compound forms.-Metal bodies, such as earth boring drills, are provided with a hard metal facing by applying a granular composition of a metal such as tungsten and a hardening agent such as carbon and fusing by welding, preferably by means of the electric arc. The composition may consist of nine pounds of powdered unwrought tungsten, one pound of finely divided carbon, together with a binder such as one ounce of dextrine. These ingredients are mixed in dry condition and dextrine water added to form a paste which is dried and baked in an oven and then broken into particles small enough to pass a “ inch screen. In use the tungsten alloys with the carbon to form tungsten carbide and also alloys with the metal body. Part of the carbon is burned during welding and serves as a reducing medium to prevent oxidation of the tungsten. A number of layers may be applied in succession. Elements such as nickel, uranium, molybdenum, manganese, vanadium, titanium, chromium or tantalum may be used in addition to or as a substitute for tungsten. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) states also that the tungsten may also be used in the form of a welding rod. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
