Abstract

576,523. Uniting by fusion. O & F. CO., PROPRIETARY, Ltd. Nov. 26, 1943, No. 19763. Convention date, Sept. 18. [Class 83 (iv)] Arc-welding electrodes for welding austenitic chromium-nickel steel consists of a mild steel core wire with a coating containing 15-30 per cent of nickel and also chromium, molybdenum manganese and gas and slag-forming ingredients. It may also contain reducing or stabilising agents such as titanium, niobium or tantalum. The coating may be prepared from ingredients ground to 100 mesh or more and mixed with a binding agent such as sodium silicate to form a plastic dry mass which is extruded on the core under very high pressure such as at least 400 lbs. per sq. in. The coating may be from 1.5 to twice the diameter of the core. It may contain 15-30 per cent of nickel, 20-60 per cent of chromium, 4-10 per cent of ferrosilicon, 3-8 per cent of ferro-molybdenum, 4 to 10 per cent of ferro-manganese and the balance gas and slag-forming ingredients. One coating of thickness 1.85 times the core diameter consisting of 15 per cent of nickel powder, 27.6 per cent of chromium, 4.4 per cent of ferro-molybdenum, 4 per cent of ferro-manganese, 6 per cent of ferro-titanium and 43 per cent of flux produces a weld deposit containing 0.06-0.08 per cent of carbon, 10.3 to 10.6 per -cent of nickel, 18 to 18.5 per cent of chromium, 2.5- 2.75 per cent of molybdenum, 1.2-1.8 per cent of manganese and 0.5 to 1 per cent of silicon. Either alternating or direct current may be used. Specifications 299,604, 320,596, [both in Class 83 (iv)], and 528,901 are referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 states that the electrode may be used for welding also chromium steels or may be used in the atomic-hydrogen process. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
