Abstract

613,493. Pipe couplings. VICTAULIC CO., Ltd., and JOHNSON, P. G. Aug..2, 1946, No. 23110. [Class 99 (i)] In a method of coupling pipes 5 lined with bitumen or other plastic material 6 by means of a socket on one pipe which engages. over the other pipe (Fig. 2), or a coupling.sleeve 7 which engages over the ends of both pipes (Fig. 1), a gap is left between the linings of the pipes, a backing-up ring 11 of rubber or like material is inserted to bridge the gap and pressed into engagement with the inner surfaces of the linings, melted lining material is poured through a hole in the socket or sleeve to fill the annular space between the pipe ends, the linings and the ring 11, the material is allowed to solidify, and finally the ring is removed and the hole closed by a plug. A continuous lining across the joint is thus obtained. A funnel 12, screwed into the hole, is used for the pouring. A second funnel is provided in another hole at the highest point of the sleeve or socket; this serves as an air vent. The backing-up ring 11 may be made of a strip whose length is greater than the lining bore so that itis self-compressed into position on insertion. It may also be a sleeve of smaller outside diameter than the bore, in which case a device as shown in Fig. 4 is required for expanding it into contact with the lining. The sleeve 16 is externally cylindrical and has internal tapering portions. These portions are engaged by expander members 17, 18, which can be drawn together (as shown) to expand the sleeve, or moved apart (chain lines) to contract it. Each expander has three wheels- 19, the positions of which can be adjusted radially by screws 21. Expander 17 is carried by a shaft 22 which has a threaded extension in engagement with expander 18. Relative rotation of the expanders is prevented by two guide pins 24 so that rotation of the shaft 22 moves the expanders towards or away from one another. Specification 392,287 is referred to.
