Abstract

613,250. Pistons. PUGH, C. A., DARBY, L. A., and PLESSEY CO., Ltd. June 13, 1946, No. 17709. [Class 122 (i)] The piston of a fluid compressor comprises a self-lubricating sleeve 9 of carbon, graphite or a compound of carbon and soft metal particles, mounted on a metal cone 5. The sleeve is retained at its lower end by a flange 8 on the core 5, a spring 10 being interposed between the end of the sleeve 9 and the flange 8, and at its upper end by a cover-plate 14 containing apertures 16. Between the cover-plate 14 and a plate 11 fitted into the sleeve 9 is an inlet valve 13 of disc form covering a central aperture in the plate 11. Bolts 15 which secure the plates 11, 14 to the top of the core 5 prevent rotation of the gudgeon-pin 7. The little end bearing of the connecting rod 20 contains a bush 6 of similar material to the sleeve 9.
