Abstract

612,750. Self-coiling reels. PILLIN, J. B. May 31, 1946, No. 16606. [Class 99 (ii)] [Also in Group XXX] A self-coiling reel of the type described in Specification 481,030 and having a ratchet-andpawl mechanism to control the re-winding device is provided with a visual indicator actuated by the angular movement of the reel and so marked as to identify the condition of the ratchet mechanism to the operator of the hose. The indicator consists of a shutter 16 located in the rear of an aperture 5 in the wall of the reel cabinet, or supported by a frame if the reel be not enclosed, and having a tail-piece 17 which can be raised from the position shown by means of a projection 12 on an arm 11 pivoted at 10 to a bracket 9 fixed within the cabinet. The other end of the arm carries a resilient spring 13 which is in the path of pins 7 attached to the outer side of the cheek plate 6 of the reel; each pin corresponds to a tooth of the ratchet mechanism so that, when a pin is in contact with the spring, the pawl of the mechanism is in position to prevent backward rotation of the reel, and similarly, when the spring is free as in Fig. 2, the mechanism will instantly re-wind the hose or cable if the operator's grip on same is released. The portions of the shutter in view through the aperture 5 in the two positions (Fig. 2, and raised) are of different colours or carry suitable words so as to indicate to the operator the condition of the ratchet mechanism.
