Abstract

Freshly spun artificial threads are caused to spread in treatment baths wherein they are treated with liquids in a continuous process by being led by means of guide-rolls through a series of vats, one or more of the guide-rolls being situated above the vats and being preferably grooved and being driven and the other rolls being mounted freely in the vats, characterised in that the driven roll appertaining to the first vat and being situated either outside the vat or at the beginning of the bath run is driven at a greater speed than the following top-rolls, all of the latter being driven at the same speed. In an example, in a bath-run of 45 cm. in each bath, a sufficient thread-spreading is obtained in all the baths if the circumferential speed of the first driven grooved roll, whence the threads run into the bath at a speed of 60 metres per minute be about 1 per cent higher than the circumferential speed of the driven rolls appertaining to the other baths.
