928,435. Metals cleaning, pickling and coating; wire; heat treatment of metals. BRITISH OXYGEN CO. Ltd. Feb. 13, 1962 [Feb. 14, 1961], No. 5426/61. Classes 72 and 82. [Also in Group XXII] Apparatus for continuously passing wire through a treatment zone comprising winding the wire 27 on to a tapered drum 15, arranging for each coil of wire on the drum to travel down the drum in succession so as to slide off on to a cage 18; causing the wire to travel down the cage, subjecting the wire to the desired treatment while travelling down the cage in the enclosure 32, and continuously withdrawing wire from the cage after treatment. The wire is presented to the tapered drum at the larger diameter, and leaves the cage over idling wire guide pulleys 22 and 23 to be drawn through a pair of driven rolls 33 as the cage 18 revolves. In particular, the wire is immersed in liquid solutions in the treatment zone as for example solutions chosen to effect degreasing, acid pickling, or surface coating of the wire; enclosure 32 is then a tank positioned so that the wire on cage 18 is completely below the surface of the liquid. Alternatively the wire could be subjected to heat-treatment with the cage inserted in a small oven.
