Abstract

583,321. Coating wire. HENLEY'S TELEGRAPH WORKS CO., Ltd., W. T., and HOLMES, W. T. Oct. 3, 1944, No. 18916. [Class 140] [Also in Group XXII] In a method of producing enamelled wire by a continuous process, the bare wire of greater diameter than its final size is drawn through a die to effect a small reduction in its cross section and produce a fresh clean surface, the lubricant is removed and the wire is passed into the enamelling apparatus, the power for the drawing operation being applied to the wire immediately before it enters the enamelling machine. A group of ten wires 1 from bobbins 2 are taken over a multi-grooved pulley 4, beneath a roller 23 dipping into a lubricant bath 22, through a group of drawing dies 24 and then by way of a pulley 26, felt wipers 27 and a capstan 8 to a bath 28 of spirit for removing the final traces of lubricant. The bath 28 is contained within the enamelling tank 11 and after leaving the spirit bath the wire travels upwardly through a drying oven, down into the enamelling tank and up again into the oven. A number of coats of enamel may be applied before the finished wires 7 pass over pulleys 15, 16, 18 and 19 to the take-up bobbins 6. The pulleys 15 and 16 are driven through gearing from a motor 17 and the capstan 8 is driven by a belt 21 from the pulleys 15 and 16. With wires within the range 32 to 25 S.W.G. the dies are preferably fed with bare copper wire of the next larger S.W.G. size to the size required in the finished article. The speed of the drawing is considerably less than that ordinarily employed in drawing operations and may vary from 5 to 100 feet per minute.
