Abstract

655,472. Electroplating rod material. KENMORE METALS CORPORATION. March 8, 1948, No. 7137. Convention date, March 6, 1947. [Class 41] [Also in Group XXII] Apparatus for treating rod material such as heavy gauge wire having a diameter of at least 0.075 inches, comprises coiling means operable to form the wire continuously into a helical coil in which the individual turns of the helix are of uniform diameter, holding means operable to maintain the individual turns of the helix to uniform size and to simultaneously and continuously rotate the helix to feed it horizontally and longitudinally with respect to its own axis, and a liquid-treating means for said wire, comprising a tank disposed below the helix holding means and adapted to surround at least a portion of each of a plurality of said helical turns which are adjacent to each other. As shown in Fig. 4, the wire is first straightened by being passed between pairs of vertical and horizontal rollers 22, 23 and is then coiled by being passed between grooved rollers 61, 62 and under an adjustable roller 67. The wire is then gripped between a driven roller 10 and a pressing roller 15 and fed in the form of a helix into and through several baths shown in Fig. 1, namely a cleaning bath 39, two cold water rinsing baths 40, 41, an acid bath 42, cold water rinsing baths 43, 44, an electroplating bath 45, a cold water washing bath 46, and a warm water washing bath 47. To obtain coils of uniform diameter the speed of travel of the wire may be regulated by means indicated in Fig. 8. Contacts 24, 25 are placed near the bottom of one of the coils of wire. If the coil becomes large enough to engage the contact 25 a servomechanism 27 and speed-adjusting means 28 are electrically operated so that the speed of drive of the wire is reduced. On the other hand, if the coil touches the contact 24 the speed will be increased. In a modification, the apparatus is adapted to deal with two wires at the same time. The wire may have several coatings of the same or of different metals. Specification 645,834 is referred to.
