Abstract

1,165,014. Coiling; treating wire. H. KENMORE. 11 Nov., 1966 [22 Aug., 1966], No. 50588/66. Headings B3A and B3E. An apparatus for coiling wire and treating it at speeds of at least 50 metres/min. comprises a wire feeding and helix forming device 20 with a grooved rotor 31 and one or two horizontal storage rollers 40, 41. The wire is copper or steel and it is fed from a coil 10 through mechanical scale removing rollers 13, 14 which flex the wire. Wire bushes may also be provided to loosen the scale. The wire passes through straightening rollers 15, 16 to the rotor 31, around an idler pulley 33 and under a portion of the following wire. The rotor has a groove so that the wire is trapped in the groove by the following wire. The length of the overlap can be increased by crossing the wire between the rotor and the idler. Two annular grooves may be provided on the rotor to feed two wires to form a pair of helices which are supported one within the other on the rollers 40, 41. The rollers are driven to feed the helix therealong with its lower portion passing successively through a series of liquid treatments. The liquids are contained in a bath 50 with adjustable partitions for various wire treatments. One of the tanks may include electrodes for anodic or cathodic cleaning, electroplating or electrodepositing. A hood is provided to exhaust the acid vapours. The pitch of the wire will vary with different gauges so the bath is mounted on rollers so that its position can be changed. The pitch of the wire is kept uniform by a guide (80), Fig. 2 (not shown), which has comb-like teeth (81). After pickling &c. in one tank the wire is passed through a hot lime, borax or phosphate solution bath to coat it in lime. Since the acid dissolution is exothermic no heating is required to evaporate the water from the wire. The lime &c. layer serves as a holder for a lubricant used at a later drawing stage. An ultrasonic generator may be provided in the pickling baths to disturb the scale.
