Abstract

894,048. Metals cleaning; coating with metals; modifying metallic surfaces. BRITISH OXYGEN CO. Ltd. Oct. 10, 1960 [Oct. 12, 1959], No. 34576/59. Class 82(2). [Also in Group XXII] A process for manufacturing wire comprises the steps of mechanically treating a hot rolled rod to loosen and at least partially remove scale, subjecting the rod, while immersed in a coating bath, to sonic or ultra sonic vibrations for further removal of scale, and passing the substantially de-scaled and coated rod to at least one drawing operation. The mechanical treatment consists of alternate bending and straightening of the rod or wire brushing. The coating bath consists of a phosphate solution comprising a solution of sodium, aluminium, or zinc phosphate together with a small quantity of phosphoric acid. Alternatively, a borax solution having a concentration of from 10 to 28 ounces of borax per gallon or a suspension of lime in water may be used, the lime coating being baked on to the rod by passing the rod through a heating zone. Drawing lubricant such as soap or grease may be applied in addition to the lime coating. The coating bath is maintained at approximately 200‹F. and the liquid is circulated in a direction opposite, to the direction of travel of the wire through the bath to remove from said liquid any scale, dirt or other contaminant. Apparatus for carrying out the process comprises feed rollers 10 for feeding the metal rod 20 to bending and straightening rollers 11 and 12 respectively from which the wire passes to a coating bath 13 with which is associated a transducer 14 of the magneto-strictive or piezo-electric type for agitating the bath with ultra sonic or sonic vibrations. On leaving the coating bath the wire passes between heater elements 16 which bake the coating on the wire. The coated wire is lubricated at 18 with soap or grease before being drawn through a die 19. If a further copper coating has to be applied the drawn wire is passed through a bath of copper sulphate solution in which the wire is subjected to sonic or ultrasonic vibrations to remove the drawing soap, grease or any other lubricant or dirt and the copper coating is deposited on the freshly cleaned surface of the wire.
