Abstract

878,887. Cleaning metals. KENMORE, H. March 10, 1960 [March 20, 1959], No. 8531/60. Class 82(2) A continuous process for removing the surface layers of metal rods or wires, particularly copper or copper alloy rods coated with oxide film from the rolling mills, comprises axially propelling or pulling (e.g. by drums 11, 12) the rods through a mechanical descaling device 14 and 15, straightening the rods in device 22, curving the rods by roller 23 into an advancing helix with a horizontal axis so that the coils 10 may move over supporting rollers 30 and 31, treating the suspended portions of the coils in the baths 40, 41, 42, 44, 45 (shown in the Figure) the treatment including at least one acid pickling bath (e.g. 10% sulphuric acid solution) and at least one solvent bath (e.g. comprising a solution of 25 g/l of alkali cyanide such as KCN, 10 g/1 of alkali hydroxide and up to 70 g/1 of copper "ion") in which the surface layers of copper &c. are removed from the rod. The treated rod from the bath 45 may be continuously drawn thereafter down to wire size, first by expanding the coils to large size by the device 50 and thence passing to drawing devices comprising reels 70, 71, 72 and dies 73, 74. The rod may be drawn prior to curving to decrease any non-uniformities (not shown).
