[Class 61 (ii)] [Also in Groups XIV and XXIV] A lever mechanism, particularly applicable to the operation of the cutting blades of pliers and shears, comprises two levers 5, 6 pivoted at 7, the lever 5 having a portion 9 pivoted thereto at 10 and normally retained by a spring 28 against a stop 35 to act as a rigid member for receiving an applied force to be transmitted to a member W to be worked. When the resistance offered by the work W reaches a certain value, the spring 28 gives and the portion 9 of the lever 5 moves relatively thereto as shown in the Figure, and a pawl 15 pivoted at 16 moves from a stop 20 into engagement with ratchet teeth 18 on lever 6. The applied force on lever 9 is then transmitted through pivots 10, 16 and the fulcrum of the pawl-and-ratchet teeth to the lever 5 with a greater leverage.
