Abstract

The clutch device has a friction clutch (15) which is engaged automatically by spring force (20) and connects the output shaft (11) to a tool carrier (19), e.g. for driving the cutting blade (12) of a lawnmower. To release the clutch use is made of a switching device (16), operated by spring force (17), which can be moved back manually with little expenditure of force. The clutch and switching device contain force-multiplying means (45, 46) based on a wedge effect. A movable clutch part (21), connected to the tool carrier in terms of driving, and a switching element (62), acting on the said clutch part, of the switching device can simultaneously be designed as a brake (14) which comes into effect when the clutch is released. For driving the tool carrier, the switching device is moved back. This releases the brake and the clutch engages automatically. When the switching device is released, this automatically brings about the release of the clutch and the braking of the tool carrier so that, for example, when the lawnmower is left, a dangerous situation does not arise. <IMAGE>
