606,024. Work-holders. PRESTWICH, J. A. Jan. 8, 1946, No. 699. [Class 83 (iii)] [Also in Group XXIII] A work-holder for use during gauging &c. consists of a base 5 having a central screwed column 6 on which a screwed sleeve 7 is mounted. A clamping arm 10 is frictionally mounted on the sleeve 7 by means of a spring 12 and a nut 13 screwed on the bottom end of the sleeve 7. A lever 14 is rigidly secured to the sleeve 7, which moves the clamping arm 10 vertically along the column 6 and swings it also about this pivot. The horizontal swinging movement of the clamping arm 10 is limited by stops remote from the jaw. In use, to unclamp the work-piece A, the arm 14 is moved in a counter-clockwise direction which unclamps the work-piece and then swings the clamping arm out of engagement with it, the stop limiting the movement of the clamping arm. On moving the lever 14 in a clockwise direction, the clamping arm is first moved over the work-piece A and then down to clamp it. In a modification, the sleeve 7 is threaded externally and internally, the external thread receiving the clamping arm. The vertical movement of the clamping arm is then equal to the sum or difference of the pitches of the threads, depending on the direction in which the threads are tapped.
