Abstract
605,766. Embossing processes. BROGAN, W. L., and IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. Jan. 4, 1946, Nos. 368 and 3260. [Class 100(ii)] A process for embossing unsupported sheets of, or textile fabrics coated with, polyvinyl chloride or a copolymer thereof, on normal plate embossing machinery, employs plate temperatures of at least 170‹F., with an appropriately short dwell, a sheet of regenerated cellulose being interposed between the embossing plate and the sheet or fabric to be embossed. Two examples are given. Cotton fabric coated with a composition consisting of equal parts of polyvinyl chloride, tricresyl phosphate and iron oxide pigment is fed into an embossing press with a film of regenerated cellulose 0.0015 inches thick between the coating and the engraved platen which is heated to 220‹F. On release of the pressure, the coated fabric and the film adhering to it are withdrawn. Successive portions are embossed in turn and the fabric is then batched up with the film and allowed to cool, when the film is separated without difficulty from the embossed fabric. A polyvinyl chloride sheet material 0.0020 inches thick made by calendering a mixture of polyvinyl chloride 100 parts by weight, tricresyl phosphate 42 parts by weight, and iron oxide pigment 8 parts by weight, is embossed in a similar manner, using a film of regenerated cellulose 0.0015 inches thick between the sheet and the engraved platen which is heated to 220‹F. The whole is allowed to cool before the film is removed from the embossed sheet.
