Abstract

605,704. Latches. PERL, A. H. F. April 10, 1945, No. 8819. [Class 44] A mortice latch or lock comprises a tubular barrel 11, Figs. 1 and 2, within which slides a bolt 10 having a stem 15 around which is a spring 14, and a member 16 pivoted to the inner end of the stem 15 and carried by and interlocked with the operating spindle 18 of the door handle, preferably with a pin-and-slot connection allowing lost motion. The nose of the latch bolt may be domed or bevelled. In a modification, the bolt 10, Fig. 5, is hollow, and the stem extends from the domed nose, passing through the closed rear end of the barrel 11 and through a clearance aperture in the transverse yoke 22 of a U-shaped link 23 pivoted to an arm 17 on the handle spindle 18, and ending in a ball-end 24. Free rearward motion of the bolt is thus allowed. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 6 the hollow bolt 10 has a chamfered face through which projects a ball 27 pressed outwardly by a flange 28 on the forward end of the stem 15. Rearward movement of the ball 27 and the stem 15 relatively to the bolt 10 is limited by an abutment 29 in the bolt. The barrel is made cylindrical to fit into a hole drilled inwardly from the edge of the door. Preferably, it is made from flat sheet bent to tubular form with the edges not in contact and is compressed slightly to enter the hole. Specification 588,046 is referred to.
