Abstract

Phenols are extracted from coke-plant ammonia liquor containing the same and also hydrogen sulphide by dissolving ammonia in the said liquor and maintaining the ammonia content of the liquor while being extracted with a benzol solvent sufficiently high to provide to the said hydrogen sulphide an increased resistance to absorption in the solvent, and scrubbing the ammoniated liquor with the said solvent to extract thereby phenols; scrubbing the phenolized solvent with an aqueous caustic solution and thereby forming alkali phenate in the said caustic solution, the free phenols being separated from the said caustic solution by treatment with an acidic reagent. The concentration of ammonia as ammonium salts in the liquor is at least one-tenth mole. per litre and, by the ammonia addition step, the ratio of ammonia as ammonium hydroxide to ammonia as ammonium salts is increased by the ammonia addition step at least one-tenth of a unit and to the most about five to one. A detailed example is given.
