Abstract

Sodium bisulphite solution is prepared by treating an aqueous solution containing a sodium salt of a weakly acidic volatile acid, such as carbon dioxide or hydrogen sulphide, with a cation exchange resin in acid form and treating the resulting sodium resinate with sulphurous acid to recover the resin in acid form and produce a solution of sodium bisulphite. The volatile acid is evolved and in the case of hydrogen sulphide may be collected and burnt to produce sulphur dioxide for use in the process. Ion exchange resins containing carboxy or phenolic hydroxy groups or both are particularly applicable.
