Abstract
Phenol is separated from the aqueous liquor by extraction with cumene, and the phenol is then separated from the solvent using an aqueous solution which contains more than 50% alkali phenate and a small percentage, e.g. 0.2% to 5%, of free alkali. The cumene and the aqueous phenate solution can be mixed in a tower filled with Raschig rings; but it is preferable to effect the mixing in a gear pump or in a centrifugal pump. In an example, a liquor from a technical process having a phenol content of 3.4% and a pH of 3.6 is extracted with cumene. An aqueous solution containing 53.4% of sodium phenate and 1.6% of sodium hydroxide is then used to separate the phenol from the solvent, and gives an extraction yield of 99.8%.
