Abstract

590,907. Tanning-agents. SCHULLER, K. Oct. 25, 1944, No. 20705. [Class 76] A tanning extract with a low content of alkaline salts and of organic non-tanning substances is prepared from sulphite cellulose waste liquor by adding, preferably after concentration of the liquor, a water-miscible liquid organic substance which dissolves the ligno-sulphonic acid but precipitates alkaline salts, and removing the precipitate. Suitable organic liquids are methyl or ethyl alcohol, alcohol prepared from sulphite cellulose waste liquor, and acetone. Before adding the organic liquid the liquor may be made alkaline, e.g., with sodium or potassium carbonate, ammonia distilled off, and acid added to form alkaline salts. By adjusting the quantity of alcohol used (e.g., from “ to 3 parts per part of liquor) and the time allowed for precipitation (e.g., ¢ to 24 hours), tanning extracts of above 60, per cent purity may be obtained: After removal of the precipitate the alcohol is distilled off and recovered.
