Abstract

In the pyrolysis of olefines in the presence of -SH radicals and a diluent (e.g. as described in Specification 916,133) the effluent is contacted with aqueous ammonia to absorb the -SH radicals, the resultant solution is stripped with the diluent and the resultant mixture of diluent, ammonia and source of -SH radicals is recycled to the pyrolysis. Steam is the preferred diluent. The stripped liquid is recycled to recontact the effluent. The production of isoprene from 2-methylpentene-1 and -2 is described.
